GROWING UP

Hello friends, I just joined a ‘Chama.’ It’s a women’s
savings and investments group. When I got the invitation from one of my
friends, I felt thrilled and couldn’t wait to be part of a team of like-minded
ambitious young women. Being young is such a thrill but boy do we mess up while
at it or what? That same messing up is actually called growth. We learn when we
fail or succeed, when we try and do stuff… When we dare to imagine and attempt
implementing our thoughts only to realize that it is not as viable or as
feasible as we had thought…
My post today is only about beautiful
beginnings and growing up. It is good to look back and see our own errors in judgment
and learn that situations sometimes are bigger than us. I have learnt by
observing my elders that things are best done in their order of priority. At
the same time, I can’t help but hear my dad’s voice in my ears telling me to
try and better prioritize my matters. I note now, as I did then that my Achilles’
heel is prioritization.
This has only been an issue with me
mainly because I have always wished to meet people at their demand. Not to
sound self-righteous - maybe I should add that also at my convenience- but
mostly at their demand on the account that their reasons are valid. The two voices
that have told me to forget about saving the world which I can recall on this
instant belong to both my partner and another my former boss. It is impossible to impress
everyone. But again I should add that these statements leaned towards making me
available to them as opposed to me taking a breather when I need to and
basically do me. We all have ulterior motives I suppose. So how do we define
ulterior motives? When you buy a present for a friend, you feel good about
yourself and also happy to make someone happy. When you invite guests at your
house and play a host, this makes you happy and fulfilled as it does to them to
feel loved and rightfully so.
Back to the chama story, so I offered
to help in setting up the constitution because I was being nice (and pro-active
as always-lol) I must thank the good Lord because there is joy in being willing
to serve. I have basically educated myself in all the policy making rules,
regulations and principles noted therein. I would have never learnt these
things had I not offered to help. I immersed myself in a world of research-
both primary and secondary- and gained so much knowledge and information all of
which will forever remain with me as tools of my trade in all fields. I would
like to encourage everyone who is in any group, be it an investment group or a common
interest group to avoid thinking that being a passive member is a convenient thing.
I am one month in and I am feeling even more thrilled to learn from these young
ambitious women and grow with them as well.
Feeling blessed.
Sincerely,
Nekoye
